Remember that eating should be a pleasure. Our bodies need a whole range of different food types for continued health and wellness. The secret is to know what you’re eating and strike the right balance to get the nutrients that your body requires. 

General food management tips

Once you’ve settled into a routine and you’re further along in your recovery from ostomy surgery, it’s vital to continue to eat a healthy and balanced diet. Here are some tips to follow:

  • Enjoy three to four regular meals a day
  • Balance your food intake. Try to eat a bit of everything from the food circle shown below.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables each day
  • Drink plenty of fluids each day, especially water  



Ileostomy and urostomy food tips

  • If you have had ileostomy surgery, it is even more important to drink plenty of fluids each day to hydrate your body
  • If you have had ileostomy or urostomy surgery, be aware that certain foods may cause a strong odour in your output. These include asparagus, fish, onions, garlic, and some spices.
